Carl Shames, PhD

Resume: Carl Shames, PhD received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Colorado in 1975. He has extensive experience as a psychologist in a variety of settings, including community clinics, hospitals, criminal justice agencies. In a private psychotherapy practice he specialized in work with adolescents and young adults.

Dr. Shames left this profession to undertake research and consulting on health and nutrition issues. He has continued to work as a holistic health educator and practitioner. He became interested in neurofeedback while searching for alternative, holistic treatments for ADHD, depression and other mental health issues. He studied neurofeedback with Sue and Siegfried Othmer among the initial founders of the field. He believes that neurofeedback is the beginning of an entirely new field of knowledge and practice, lying between psychology and neurophysiology: our understanding of and communication with the living patterns of brain functioning.

Dr. Shames has written and lectured extensively and is especially interested in the relations between healing, spirituality, politics and human evolution.

Our Practice

We are conveniently located in the Plaza Professional Building at the El Cerrito Plaza, and just off Highway 101 in Corte Madera, Marin County.

Following an initial evaluation, sessions are 45-50 minutes. In general, expect 8-15 sessions; more may be needed in some cases, but often a significant reduction of symptoms can be achieved sooner. We will be able to tell within the first few sessions whether neurofeedback is likely to be helpful for your condition and how many sessions should be expected.

Please note: this is not a program of diagnosis, treatment or prevention of specific disorders. It is a holistic health approach addressing imbalances that often underlie many conditions. These methods are not a substitute for medical treatment and should be used in conjunction with other health care services.

Nutrition plays an important role in our wellbeing and in effective brain functioning. Nutritional imbalances that may be contributing to the presenting problems will be discussed. Neurofeedback may be helpful in reducing the cravings that are part of an unbalanced dietary cycle.
